Saw the inspirational Richard Stallman speak about free software at UTS and the Powerhouse Museum on his recent tour of Australia. Spurred on by his enthusiasm, I've compiled my first kernel over the past 2 weeks (with a lot of assistance from those more knowledgeable than myself) and even installed some audio software.
This is a huge step for me. As confusing as it can be, it's helping me understand how all the tools work together in the Gnu/Linux system. No more serial numbers and online registrations to grapple with...just a whole lot of new challenges to do with finding all the necessary dependencies and learning the relevant terminology.
Still experimenting with the LADSPA plugins in Terminator-X and Ardour. Almost blew the speakers (and my hearing) a few times, but it's been great fun mining for unexpected sounds.
My next step is to get the soft synths going in Rosegarden - cause I'm finally starting to tire of the Nord (thought the day would never come).
