1200 Days to Make an Album

Recently I came across the RPM Challenge, an initiative that encourages musicians to record an entire album in the month of February 2007.

The RPM Challenge made me reflect on my own efforts. I've set so many deadlines for the completion of the fourth Deprogram album. Yet it still drags on, and I can't wait for the finish!

A couple of weeks ago I mentioned that we were guerilla mixing - this is the term we use to describe fast and furious mixing on the cheap. All started well, and I could feel the mounting excitement as we made steady progress - this project will finally be over! I started to visualise the CD cover and imagine the music being released and out of my hands.

In the last week, our efforts have been derailed again by work demands. Of course, the bills have to be paid, regardless of creative priorities. Sometimes when you take on a job, you can't predict the amount of hours it will take. This is what happened with a recent web project, which has taken on mammoth proportions. I hope that we can get back to guerilla mixing this afternoon, once the final bugs of the project have been ironed out.

It's a delicate balance, producing the music we want and surviving as independent artists. The main thing is just to keep going, regardless of financial pressures and delays. Next time I'll try to accelerate the album making process by joining the 2008 RPM Challenge.
