Rhythm Experiment

A while ago I was playing around with some drum recordings, overlaying different rhythms to get new accents. Using the DJing software, Mixx, I stumbled on some pretty unexpected effects and a slightly richer drum sound.

I recorded synth improvisations in Ardour and have started mapping out some sections. The mix is in a pretty raw state but here's what I've got so far:

Cat muse

The Bondi Wave concert went off smoothly with confident performances by the bands. The sound had energy and clarity. The vision projected turned out well - thanks to the TAFE students who worked as camera operators and used their creativity to supply some great shots to work with.

Now I can turn my attention to all the new songs that have been languishing on my computer. I was thinking of producing a live album next, to break my patterns of composing music in the same way. Usually I start with a rhythm but now I'd like to try out some barely formed musical ideas with other musicians, starting with piano, bass, drums and voice.

Another year rolls around and it's time again for the Bondi Wave - an annual youth music course. Young bands develop a set through songwriting and performance workshops, then perform them on a decent stage and PA. I'm involved in the video side of things, vision mixing live camera sources and pre-footage during the concert.

The course has been going for over 10 years, acting as a springboard for teenage bands, and attracting some great tutors. I've been absorbing some of their tips on stagecraft and songwriting myself - every little bit helps.

The 'Waited So Long' film clip has been uploaded to Youtube. Click here to view.

I'm slowly coming out of creative hibernation. I've been writing and producing a lot, thinking, and most importantly, trying to stay warm. With night temperatures going as low as 4°C, I've suddenly become very productive. Projects that were stalled are now back on track.

I'm having a fun time using Ardour for mixing and arranging and getting into the deeper aspects of the program. Usually I disagree with my machine and software, but this one of the rare times we're working harmoniously.
